I knew Goldwings were pricey, but I didn’t realize that they could get this expensive:
I guess it’s been a while since I looked at bike prices. I don’t even want to look at BMWs. I’m not in the market for a full-dress touring bike, but more curious about the crazy prices, like pricing out an F150 to $70K+, or trying to figure out how many leather options you can slam onto a 911.
EDIT: I did look at BMW’s TOTL touring bike, and the prices are surprisingly close:

You must have missed something. I got $34.8K

Probably the paint. I tried to go back to select that two-tone, but didn’t want to re-select everything.

So you could buy a big Cruiser big that won’t rattle you teach, or make you def. or you could buy a Honda Ridgeline.

Local Harley dealer had a Ultra Limited with a tag of $55k, but they basically threw the entire Screamin’ Eagle and accessory catalog at it.

I could get a CTR for that.

That was probably it.
Next exercise: Max out a Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited.

Or just buy this:
Not as well equipped as those two mind you, but probably a tad more fun.

One ugly-ass bike. It was hard to judge the option prices without spending all day on their ridiculously slow configurator, so I just grabbed what looked expensive and tasteless. Quite a bargain. But again, for comparison purposes, here’s the Miata I really want:

A friend of mine has a bike like that, but he didn’t pay retail. Some dentist in Milwaukee built up a bike so laden with chrome and custom paint that it probably doubled in weight, but like most nouveau riche Harley buyers, discovered that he really didn’t like riding motorcycles (or Harleys at least). He got quite a deal on it, but cleaning it must be a bitch...

And that’s before the salesman sells you bars, grips, floorboards, LED lighting, saddlebag liners, cupholders... You can easily spend another 5-10K in chrome and accessories before you pick it up.
This is exactly why you find your own 6-7 year old ultra limited with only 20K on it being sold my a retiree who is giving up on riding.

Exactly. I have no problem buying used, as long as the vehicle was properly maintained (see the tale of my friend’s R1100RT transmission troubles).
For shits and giggles I thought I’d price out a nice R1200RT, a bike more my style, and here’s what I found:
WTF? That started out as a semi-reasonable $18K bike. $20K in options? Seriously? This is Porsche-like levels of factory accessorizing. All of a sudden that K1600 seems like a bargain.

or you just say “no” when the salesman tries to push it on you. Is that so hard?

probably a tad more fun.
Have you ever actually been on a bike?
besides, no one who is buying a bike is interested in hearing about a Miata instead.

To some, no. To others that need to have a nicer, shinier, and more unique bike than all the buddies he’s going to ride with? Yes.
The male ego is a fragile thing.
The same thing applies to any other bro-type vehice (Jeep, Brodozer, Camaro, Mustang, etc....) Harley just happens to beat the aftermarket to it.

Yes, actually, I’ve owned several over the years and ridden many more. And I’ve borrowed a friend’s Goldwing Aspencade, so I do have experience with the big monsters. Riding the GW made me forget that I was on a motorcycle, and it didn’t suit my needs. It was the perfect bike for him to shuttle back and forth between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, but when in town he’d borrow my Seca II when I wasn’t using it.
The whole point of my post was that I was surprised at how expensive full-dress touring bikes have gotten. I enjoy riding, but I found that long distance touring is not my thing. Nothing wrong with it for those that enjoy it, but for that kind of money I’d rather have a Miata and a simpler bike, that’s all. Yeah, someone who is interested in a fully optioned full-dresser probably isn’t interested in a minimalist sports car. And someone that wants a $38K pickup probably isn’t cross-shopping motorcycles or sports cars - that’s not the point.
On the fun scale, at least for me, Sport Tourer>Miata>Full-Dress Tourer, but YMMV.

My mom has a 1200RT, she loves it. I think it’s a 2010 and she ought it in 2012 used for like $10k.
